Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is dominating theaters, and everybody is talking about the spectacle, the battles, and the monsters. We love that.

But here is the truth: if you are just watching for the special effects, you are missing the entire point.

If you are a father trying to navigate the absolute chaos of raising kids in 2026, Homer isn't just ancient literature. He is a survival guide. I sat down with classical philosopher CB Robertson to strip away the Hollywood hype and reveal the lessons hidden inside the Iliad and the Odyssey.

By the time you finish reading this, you will have a tactical blueprint for mastering your role as a protector, a strategist, and a world-creator for your family.

The Skeleton Key of Western Philosophy

Homer is the foundation for all of Western thought. If you want to understand the culture that created you—and if you want to understand yourself—Homer is the skeleton key.

When analyzing these texts, a fascinating divide happens among men. Are you an Iliad person, or an Odyssey person?

The Iliad appeals to the heroic impulse of young men. They want to fight, they want to be immortalized in a glorious fashion, and they are incredibly direct. But as you spend some time in the world, you begin to see the value of being multifaceted and complex. Navigating tricky social circumstances is what makes the world go round, and that is exactly where Odysseus shines.

Philosophy is Strategy, Not Theory

Applying philosophy to business or daily life is often met with criticism. People assume it is a useless skill.

This isn't a new critique. Before Socrates, a philosopher named Thales of Miletus kept getting told that he had no right to teach people how to live because he hadn't succeeded financially. To prove a point, Thales applied his reasoning to predict the weather for the next year. He invented futures trading, bought up all the olive presses near Athens, and became one of the wealthiest men in the city after a massive harvest.

He didn't do it to stay rich; he did it to get the critics out of the way so he could get back to what mattered. Philosophy isn't about sitting around thinking. It is a highly effective operational strategy.

Surviving Societal Madness

At the conclusion of the Peloponnesian War, Sparta installed puppet leaders in Athens known as the Thirty Tyrants. When these tyrants were eventually ousted, the leaders of Athens realized they couldn't let the city descend into a blood feud.

They passed a decree that mandated forgetfulness. Athenians were legally required to forget if their neighbors had supported the tyrants.

While you can't truly force someone to forget, this highlights a massive cost. Real autonomy and agency require facing the things you got wrong. You have to endure moments of deep contemplation and ask yourself, "How did I get that so wrong?" Avoiding the truth to keep the peace robs you of your agency.

Building Your Tribe

There is immense value in building camaraderie with a group of other men. In these spaces, you can be a bit looser, a bit more free in your language, and completely relaxed.

It is a completely different environment from the highly managed, HR-driven corporate world that the public school system psychologically prepares us for. That system doesn't feel like home to anybody who wants to actually run their own life. Finding or building a tribe is essential for keeping your edge sharp.

The Father as a World Creator

We live in a world that often tries to alienate men. Because of that, the male role in the house is to be a world-creator.

You set the standard for what is good, what is bad, and what is evil. It takes vision and thoughtfulness to establish those standards in a way that makes sense. You have to be a guide, offering your family a much better view of reality than what the public is trying to offer them.

Philosophy gives you the advantage. You live with your family, you eat with them, and you lead them every single day. If you bring this strategic skill into your home, you can beat culture. It is a tough fight, but you hold the high ground.

The Diamond Advice

I asked CB Robertson what single piece of "diamond advice" he would leave for his kids if they had forgotten everything else he ever taught them.

His answer was simple but profound: Worship quality and excellence.

If you take only one thing away from Homer, or from this breakdown, let it be that. Pursuing excellence will carry you as far as any other rule in existence.

Those little stressors in life can really add up

There is a quick way to ease that stress and calm your mind. It takes three steps and 10 seconds.
